Cover photo Images have no alt tags defined

Yeah, that’s intentional. Cover photos are typically decorative, so an empty alt tag is completely valid in that case.

If we added a value to the alt tag, we would be required to describe the image like “A photo of 3 pot plants on a table”. Giving it a generic alt value like “Ehrens cover photo” isn’t typically very helpful for assistive tech, so an empty alt tag is fine in this situation. 🙂

Ok I understand this approach if all images would always be purely decorative

however given that the main uses of the cover photo feature for some could be more ‘Informative Images’ than ‘decorative’ as per below,

commerce - ‘products’ - item photo

‘events’ - flyers

‘articles’ - news item cover photos

will post as a suggestion

I would argue (if I may) that the above examples wouldn’t be an appropriate use of a cover/hero image (as in, you absolutely can use a flyer image as a cover image, but not expect that to be an important, non-decorative element of your page’s content). At least, on a news article or event. I wouldn’t expect users to have to click on a narrowed image to expand a full flyer for an event. The point of the cover image is a thumbnail only; any important imagery for things like that - which would need/require assistive text - could (and should) be included within the main body of the content (so, an important news image or flyer would be worked into the post editor/content area).
